Event A: Edmond receives the letter from his dying captain that will ruin his life. Right now at the beginning of the book, we see the innocence in Edmond and how honest and kind he is.
Event B: Edmond comes home to Marseilles and proposes to Mercedes. We don't see much change in Edmond but we do see change in the characters close to him. We learn that Mercedes is also madly in love with Edmond but Fernand and Danglars are jealous of Edmond's fortune.
Event C: Edmond is arrested. We begin to see the first changes in Edmond in this part of the book. He has been arrested for a crime he did not commit and is sent to prison. He suffers in his confusion and pain. He contemplates suicide. This man is the direct opposite of the man who came home from sea a happy sailor and fiance.
Event D: Edmond meets the Abbé Faria. Another change occurs in Edmond. It appears to Edmond that Faria has all the answers he has been looking for and this is somewhat true. When Faria explains who is to blame, Edmond no longer wants to kill himself but instead has the curse of vengeance running through him. He vows to take revenge on the people responsible for his imprisonment.
Event E: Edmond escapes. When Abbé Faria dies, Edmond is distraught but takes the priest's knowledge and escapes from prison. He is ready to set his plan into affect and joins a crew of italian bandits.
Event F: Edmond finds the treasure and speaks with Caderousse. With the treasure map that Faria gave him, Edmond is suddenly a man with unlimited funds. He first goes to Caderousse to find out what has happened in the fourteen years of his imprisonment. He gives Caderousse a diamond in exchange for information. Another change comes over Dantés. He learns that all of his enemies have become rich and the woman he loved has abandoned him and remarried. This causes hate to boil up inside of Edmond.
Event G: Monte Cristo saves Morrel from bankruptcy and death. There is still the intent of revenge in Edmond's heart and mind but he wants to help the people who have always cared for him. Edmond buys all of Morrel's debts and saves his name and stops him from killing himself from disgrace.
Event H: Edmond meets and saves Albert and is introduced into French Society. Edmond has an ulterior motive for saving Albert. He wants to get close to the people who hurt him so that he can hurt them back.
Event I: Bertuccio tells his story. When Monte Cristo buys a house, he forces his servant Bertuccio to tell the story of the death that took place here. He tells Edmond that he attempted to kill Villefort in this house but instead only wounded him and saw Villefort bury a half-dead child in the garden. He saved this child and then saw Caderousse murder his wife and a jeweler. Bertuccio was arrested but saved by a priest named Abbé Busoni (Edmond). Here is another example how Edmond has really planned his plot of revenge. He has led Bertuccio to his own doorstep to find out Villefort's affair with Madame Danglars. His ingenious plan has began to take affect.
Event J: Monte Cristo wins the trust of Baroness Danglars and Madame Villefort. He gives back the Baroness's horses and saves Madame Villefort and her son from a pack of wild horses.
Event K: Monte Cristo introduces the Cavalcanti men to the Danglars' and Villeforts. He plans to humiliate the the Danglars family and the Villefort family by making them trust the Cavalcanti men.
Event L: Monte Cristo helps Franz break off the marriage with Valentine. Monte Cristo has no reason to break the marriage between Valentine and Franz but attempts to save a couple of lovers again. In this way, we wonder whether Edmond actually is going out of his way to help two people. Acting as a 'love counselor', I know that I wondered whether Edmond was trying to compensate for his own loss.
Event M: Caderousse comes to rob Monte Cristo but is stabbed and Edmond reveals his true identity before Caderousse dies. Edmond experiences his first victory against the men who betrayed him. He feels the victory is sweet.
Event N: Monte Cristo accuses Fernand of fraud and murder and Albert comes to fight Edmond. However, he backs down and Fernand confronts Edmond. Monte Cristo reveals his true identity and Fernand kills himself. The reason that Albert decides to not fight the Count is because Mercedes comes to beg Edmond not to kill her son. She tells Edmond that she always loved him and knows that the man she knows as "The Count of Monte Cristo" is actually Edmond.
Event O: Monte Cristo arranges for Valentine to 'play dead' and makes her disappear so that Madame Villefort can't kill her. Also at this time, Cavalcanti is arrested and Danglars is humiliated. Monte Cristo again uses his charm and money to save someone. He realizes that Madame Villefort is poisoning Valentine and saves her from death. We also see in this part of the book that Edmond is not over Mercedes completely. He decides to test Max's love and honesty for Valentine by seeing what would happen if Valentine was killed. He keeps the information that she is actually alive from Max to make sure that Valentine does not get hurt like Edmond did with Mercedes.
Event P: Villefort is publicly humiliated because Andrea Cavalcanti admits that Villefort is his father. Madame Villefort kills Villefort's son Eduord and kills herself. Villefort goes insane. This marks a very big change in Edmond. Yes, one of the men who wronged him has paid, but a young boy was killed for no reason. Before, Edmond did not think that any of his actions were wrong, but now he realizes he might have gone too far and feels remorse. This shows that although Edmond appeared ruthless before, he has a heart and finally understands the consequences of his actions.
Event Q: Baron Danglars is kidnapped by bandits and is forced to pay for his food. When Danglars is about to die of starvation, Edmond reveals his true identity, forces Danglars to repent and lets him free. Alas, the last man responsible for Edmond's imprisonment has been punished. Here Edmond feels victorious but worried for what God has in store for him. He accepts what is to come and is at peace.
Event R: The last major events in the book take place. Haydee reveals her love for Monte Cristo (Edmond) and he realizes that God does not wish to punish him. Albert goes off to the war and Mercedes is left to mourn both her Edmond and her son. Valentine is reunited with Max and they live happily, forever indebted to Edmond. He gives them his boat and house and reveals his identity. He tells them to, "Wait and hope." This marks the end of the book and the end of Edmond's transformation. He is content with his new life with Haydee and happy that he has had his revenge and that he was able to save some people in the process.
Conclusion: Edmond changed from a simple sailor with an honest heart to a ruthless, cunning Count literally out for blood. Within this transformation, he has also gone from showing no remorse to feeling sad for some of his actions. In the end, he is still a Count, but he has gotten his revenge and now will live happily with the woman he loves, forever grateful for God's pardon.
